As the baseball season approaches, many fantasy baseball players are gearing up for their annual drafts. One of the most important tools for a successful draft is a reliable ranking system. This is where SportWise by Rolling Insights comes in.

SportWise is a powerful sports data analytics platform that provides users with access to a wealth of data on players and teams. It offers a range of tools and features, including a draft kit that can help users prepare for their fantasy baseball drafts.

For the 2023 season, SportWise has compiled a set of rankings for both pitchers and batters. These rankings are based on a formula that takes into account a player's performance in various statistical categories and compares it to the performance of their peers.

The formula used to calculate the ranking for pitchers takes into account five categories: Wins, Saves, Strikeouts (Ks), Earned Run Average (ERA), and Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched (WHIP).

The calculation for batters' ranking is based on four statistical categories: Batting Average, Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), and Runs Scored (R).

Pitchers
mean([Wins/max([Wins]),
Saves/max([Saves]),
Ks/max([Ks]),
min([era])/era,
min([whip])/whip
])

The formula takes into account the player's performance in each category and compares it to the performance of all players in that category. To do this, the formula divides the player's performance by the maximum performance of all players in that category. For example, if Gerrit Cole had 20 wins in a season and the highest number of wins in the league was 25, his performance would be divided by 25 to get his score for the Wins category.

The formula then takes the mean or average of each player's score in each category. This gives an overall score for the player in the five categories.

The formula also takes into account the negative statistic categories of ERA and WHIP. To do this, the formula takes the minimum performance of all players in these categories and divides it by the player's performance in each category. This ensures that a low ERA and WHIP score will be reflected as a positive ranking for the player.

Overall, this calculation provides a ranking score for pitchers based on their performance in each category relative to their peers.

Batters
mean([batting_average/max([batting_average]),
HR/max([HR]),
RBI/max([RBI]),
R/max([R])
])

The formula takes into account the player's performance in each category and compares it to the performance of all players in that category. To do this, the formula divides the player's performance by the maximum performance of all players in that category. For example, if Mike Trout had a batting average of .350 in a season and the highest batting average in the league was .375, his performance would be divided by .375 to get his score for the Batting Average category.

The formula then takes the mean or average of each player's score in each category. This gives an overall score for the player in the four categories.

The formula ensures that each category has equal weight by taking the mean of each score. The formula also ensures that each player's score in each category is given equal weight by dividing their performance by the maximum performance of all players in that category.

Overall, this calculation provides a ranking score for batters based on their performance in each category relative to their peers. The higher the ranking score, the better the batter's performance in these categories.

To further understand these baseball statistics used in the formulas, here is a table with their definitions:
