The Weekend in Review 4/7

As we head into tonight's National Championship game, the Florida Gators and Houston Cougars have proven their resilience, surviving late-game comebacks to earn their spots. This matchup is set to be a nail-biter, with key players like Walter Clayton Jr. and J'Wan Roberts expected to play pivotal roles in determining the outcome.

Also, in an inspiring turn, Jarren Duran opens up about his personal battle with mental health in Netflix’s The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox. His courageous story highlights the importance of mental health support, especially for athletes facing immense pressure both on and off the field

A New Champion Will Be Crowned

It was an electric Saturday night in San Antonio -- with both the Florida Gators and Houston Cougars needing late second half comebacks to survive and advance to the National Championship game tonight. These are two of the best teams in the country, and have been all season and this is an extremely evenly matched game as evidenced by the one point line on the sportsbooks.

The X-Factor's in this game will be Walter Clayton Jr vs the Houston defense -- and J'Wan Roberts against the Florida frontcourt. Florida notoriously doesn't double-team big men and they continued that philosophy on Saturday night against Johni Broome. If they weren't going to double him, Roberts will likely be on an island in an exploitable match-up and Houston is going to need him to take advantage and score.

Clayton is on a Steph Curry-like run. ripping through every defense in his path and scoring 30+ points in each of their last two tournament games. Houston's defense, however, is a different story and they will look to blitz him and force the ball out of his hands. Florida has gotten this far by Clayton bailing out the teams sloppy play, and whether or not those other players can step up tonight is a big ask

Jarren Duran Opens Up

In a powerful moment from Netflix’s upcoming docuseries The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox, Jarren Duran courageously shares his battle with mental health. The outfielder reveals that years before his rise to All-Star status, he faced a devastating period of depression, even reaching a point where he considered ending his life.

Duran explains how, during one particularly dark time, a failed suicide attempt became a turning point—he took it as a sign that he was meant to be here for a reason. This realization helped him rebuild his mindset and ultimately led to his resurgence as one of MLB’s most dynamic players.

This honest and emotional story is a reminder that athletes, too, are human, grappling with the pressures of expectations both on and off the field. As mental health becomes a more prominent topic in sports, Duran’s decision to open up about his struggles provides crucial support for others who might be going through similar challenges. MLB now requires all teams to have mental health programs, highlighting the growing recognition of the need for support within the sports world.

Duran’s bravery in sharing his journey is an inspiring testament to resilience, showing that asking for help and prioritizing mental health is essential and that the acceptance of being this open and candid is something that will continue to see improvement in years to come
