The semi-finals are upon us and with that comes the top four in betting odds pre-tournament: France, Spain, Argentina and England. The cream definitely rose to the top as it usually does in this competition and now we are set for three amazing games to finish off a fantastic World Cup.

France is looking for access to their third straight World Cup final, while Spain has not advanced this far in the tournament since they took it home in 2010. Much will be made about how Spain has beaten this team in each of their last two meetings including in the 2024 European Championship – but I believe two entirely different teams are taking the field today. Not much separates these two teams – but France was my pre tournament look and they’ve nothing to affect my confidence in them. 

 

France has had the much easier path thus far, which is partially why they have looked so elite. Spain has been escaping with close wins right at the end of regulation – but doing it against tougher competition. This Spanish side is dangerous and can test France in ways that they haven’t been yet – but the form of Lamine Yamal is going to tell the story for me. He was a key factor for them in that win over France in 2024 and France did not have the in form attacking prowess of Mbappe, Olise and Demebele that they do today. That ultimately will be the difference for me, but if we see Yamal look the best he has all tournament I won’t be shocked to see them steal this and advance. It’s crazy that it comes down to an 18 year old for Spain, but that is the big X Factor here as well as their ability to finish the chances they create. Ultimately, there’s just too much quality in this French attack and I think they can find the back of the net multiple times against what has been the best defense in this competition.
